It was as advertised. I read it and donated to a 7th grade teacher. She was thrilled.
I really wanted to love this for my classroom, but I wish it was SOMEWHERE in the description that this is a religiously influenced book. Thankfully I teach in a Christian school so I was still able to use my class set, but I was still turned off by the fact that there were such blatant references to a faith when talking about the governing document of a nation that has a clear separation of church and state. Overall my students loved it, and it is one of the most accessible ways for middle school students to experience the Constitution, but I can't get past the insertion of religion. Please do not market this product for use in schools when it is so blatantly biased.
In response to your review, the author of this graphic novel, Doug Peterson, responds:
'Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We're pleased that your students have found 'The U.S. Constitution' to be an accessible and enjoyable way to learn. In response to your concerns, our approach is to use the actual words of various American leaders whenever possible, and in many cases they spoke in religious terms. A good example is on page 1, where we use direct quotes from John Adams and James Madison that reference religion. Another example is the famous incident in which Benjamin Franklin (a deist) suggested beginning each day of the convention with prayer. Martin Luther King Jr.'s iconic speech on page 49 is also laden with religious imagery. We try to provide as complete a picture of our history as possible, so it is inevitable that their religious language will show up. It's a rich and important part of our history. Thanks again for sharing your concerns. We greatly appreciate the feedback.'
